It calls for hynautic steering fld. in a pich its ok to use ATF ( many do ). I would (and do) use the hynautic fld as it is the recommended stuff. it flows better then the atf at low temps . Air craft brake fld ( spec mil-H-5506)is ok to use and it is aproved.DO NOT USE CAR BRAKE FLD !!!!!

I can email you the specs and bleeding info (if you have Hynautic )

thanks for the responses no i dont have the hynautic i have the syten system. i dont know if the oil mil specs are the same i guess i can research this also.
i know that atf is not perferred and i dont have to have any as in emergency but i want to by a quart because i am sure i need to top this off. its a small leak but over time fluid will need to be added. i'll check at some local marinas. there are no marine supply stores here in chattanooga since boatersworld has now closed or i'll order off internet. i had suspected that the hynautic/seastar oil could be used but wondered about something cheaper or found locally that people might be using that have the syten system like me

This link has the flds listed

http://ww2.seastarsteering.com/SHARED/Fluid.htm

your system was discoutued in 84 , I am not sure what the oem fld was but every thing points to the same fld .

Any one have a book out there on the Syten inboard steering system ?

You can find many of the fluids listed at a airport

Many people have run ATF with out proplems . I just like using the oem stuff but is $$$
