A/C location?

A/C location?
Hi all,
I have one more question, and I promise that will be it for a while. I would like to get A/C on my F25 without going into dept up to my ears. I do have a small 5000 btu ac I had in my observatory and no longer need it there.
I have been trying to figure out how I can use this ac to my advantage. My first thought was a side window, but dropped that. My second was putting it high on the wall between the head and cabinet on the other side. This way the water drip would not hurt anything. But it's hard enough getting in and out of that small place as it is. I saw one cool idea from one of the members who put it in the door leading into the cabin.
But then I got the idea, since I won't be using the anchor storage, (that's another story) to put it in the cabin where the door leads into to anchor rope storage. I would have to expand the hole where the door is, make a frame around the inside, but the ac would slip right in. I would run the plug down then along the V bunk then up to the plug in on the end of the sink area. Any water drainage would run down the keel and into the bilge.
Soooooo, is this a good idea, or what? I would like to hear from you all on any ideas you may have!

You need to have air flow to the unit to cool , the ancor locker will not give the ac any air flow , the hot/humid air needs to go some where .
I have seen the a/c mounted on the cabin/head wall . if want a 150 plus degree head maybe (Don"t)
To work right the rear of the A/C needs to be on the outside

I bought a new 12,000 BTU portable unit at Menard's for $300 to put in my salon until I get the factory unit repaired or replaced. It comes with all of the necessary attachments and mine doubles as an end table in the salon. It is very compact and I only put the duct in the window when I am running the unit. The duct disconnects very quickly and easily, collapses to a very small size, and stows easily.
I was faced with an estimate of $4,000 to replace my factory unit and opted for this unit until I get the money to replace the factory unit.
It really works great, even has a remote control, and we are very happy with it.

No it does not drip condensation anywhere because I was concerned that it would. It advertises a new "evaporative" technology that rids the unit of it's collected condensate - not sure how - but it does. It has the new R22 refrigerant and is quite small - about the height of an end table and a bit narrower than most end tables. I found them on sale at Menard's for $300 about a month ago.

I'd like to ask one more question pertaining to installing the ac in the front bow using the anchor rope storage compartment. I can see that the ac will need some air flow, but as most of you know I'm sure, there is a large chrome cover that goes over a hole I think is about 4" by 6" or more.
If I remove this cover during the times I would operate the ac, which will always be at the slip, would this allow enough exhaust air to get out of the compartment, in your thinking?
This is the only other place I can think of, to put the ac. I'm just not sure about putting it in the door.

I'm not sure that you will find the hole is that large... can you not see it from inside the anchor locker?
I would not put it there... hot air will flow over the headliner at the top of the cabin and then you might run into moisture and mold problems.
Can you not have it sticking out onto the aft deck?
Since you only want it while at the dock why not use one of those portable a/c's that supply cool air via a hose and pipe it into the V berth while keeping a/c on shore or outside the boat... that way you don't need to take it with you when out on the water.

That is a great idea!
I have a large home made deck box I can install the ac in. All I will have to do then is make a duct housing that will fit on the front of the ac, taking the plastic cover from the front, attach a 4" flexible dryer hose to that, run the hose into the front bow hatch. I can make a cover to go over the hatch when open, attach the dryer hose to it,,,,and we are in business.
And as you said, we don't have to take it with us when we leave the slip.

I have two marine AC units that are actually small heatpumps that use a water heatexchanger to condense. I bought them in a deal with a 8KW diesel marine genset which is functional. I am going to install them in my F28. The AC units are similiar to those found in West Mrine catelogue and only will require a raw water source for condensing, a drain for the condensate from the evaporator and of course ducting for return air and conditioned air. One of mine is supposed to have a bad compressor and the other noisey. I have not checked them out yet but having been an HVAC contractor it should not be a big issue for me to replace a compressor and then off to the races.

AC Refrigerant
By the way Refrigerant 22 is not the new refrigerant, it will not be manufactured 2010 on. There are many new ones. Usually the replacement for new systems is 410A and will not work in a 22 system. You will only be able to buy recycled 22 after 2009 just like what happened to Freon 12 a few years back.

I bought one of the portable 12000btu with heat and we have used it all of this summer and it has really well. it was made by Edgestar , it has a remote and also it has heat cause my bigger cruise air took a dump and they want 2700 to just replace the main unit and that does not include the a coil unit
