Who is still using Points & Condenser
After some searching on the internet I found what I have in my Distributor. After reading this site, I think anyone that had Points & Condenser should consider and upgrade to this.

This is a proven product which many have replaced their point set-ups with. Never heard of Hot-Spark...

Do you think it was worth it?
Thanks,
Larry
I would say the change over reduces problems more than it increases performance..........however less problems is better performance

Larry, I changed over from points to electronic ignition. Point type ignition can only fire plugs to about 35KVlarglo wrote:Anyone who did this, do you feel there was any improvement in performance of the engine?

By using high energy ignition, you can fire plugs to 60KV. With the upgraded spark output, I changed and used plugs with a .060 plug gap. Of course you will have better perfomance as the ignition is hotter and more efficient.
Points move. And as they move, they wear and the dwell angle changes. This will constantly need adjustment. Install electronic ignition and be done with it.

Hi Larry,
I believe th real benefit with electronic ignition is consistancy. When you replace your points & condensor, set the gap & adjust the dwell, the engine runs perfectly but only for a short while. It doesn't take long to start wearing the pivot arm and the contacts which puts your engine out of tune. This will go on until one day you'll say it's running rough and it's time for a tune up. In the mean time you've burned alot of extra fuel for nothing. (which would probably pay for the electronic change over)
With eletronic ignition there's no moving parts. You have a series of rotating magnets and a hall effect switch. Your tune stays the same all of the time.
Although I'm a firm beleiver in electronic, I still keep the old point set on board in my parts box just in case I should need it to get me home.

Paul is 100% correct. Here is a chart

This is what they say about it.
# Delivers twice the voltage to the spark plugs, increasing horsepower, fuel economy, and spark plug life.
# 2:1 improvement over points in current fall time for increased coil output.
# Rotating cobalt magnets trigger a Hall Effect integrated circuit . ...no points to burn, ...no moving parts to wear out.
# Epoxy molding makes our module impervious to dirt, oil, grease and moisture.
# Fits entirely inside the distributor.
# No "black box to clutter the engine compartment.
# Stable timing ...no need for any adjustments.
# Will trigger most multi-spark CD ignitions.

Which one should I get?
I made the switch on my last boat and loved the low-maintenance, and improved performance.
I have only had my F25 318 for one season and would like to make the switch to electronic ignition this year.
Can anyone give me the model number for making the switch. I have the Chrysler 318.
Thanks

Electronic Ignition upgrade
Hi Paul,Paul wrote:I replaced the points in my Mallory distributor with a Sierra "Ignitor" change over kit. It was simple to do and fairly inexpensive. It's been in for about 5 years now with no problems.
could you tell me where and what part numbers you found for your electronic conversion kit?
After many many attempts on several marine part sites, I have been unsuccessful in finding the kit to match my year make and model of engine. For whatever reason all the catalogues skip over my year Chrysler 318...

I'm assuming my chrysler is the same as yours outside of the year.
Mine is 1973 Chrysler LM318 with standard points/condensor ignition.
A few months ago I started a post regarding this with no success.
Any info would be a big help.
Thanks,
Paul
