Boting from Lake Erie to the Ohio River

Post by JonChristman »

Does anyone have any information on rivers and canals that may connect Lake Erie to the Ohio River. Or any of the Great Lakes to the Ohio or Mississippi?

We have considered a Erie Canal trip previously and hope to do that next year, but going south would be cool.

There are free river charts available of the Illinois Waterway which goes from Chicago to the Mississippi River just above St. Louis. Garmin also has charts for the navigable interior waterways and I am sure the other chart makers do too.

Several in our marina take this trip every year and winter in the south returning to the Great Lakes in the spring. I have not made the trip yet personally but am planning to do so in a couple of years. They say it is a good trip and quite scenic with many marinas along the way and plenty to do when they put in at the end of their travel day.

Perfect, Googling Great Loop is exactly what I was looking for. I knew I had heard someone mention it before. Instead of through Ohio it goes through Illinois.

Thanks.

If you want info on Erie Canal trip we did one in 2008 from Schenectady to Pittsford, NY and back, including Cayuga-Seneca canal. Just let me know.
