Want electronic conversion kit ('73 Chrysler 225 M318)

Post by Paul - SW Ontario »

Hi guys, I still have the stock distributor - points & condensor and want to upgrade to the electronic ignition (hall effect ignitor)....

I have searched the Canadian marinemanifold site (where I buy my inboard parts), and several other US sites trying to find this kit without any luck.

Does anyone have a Sierra part no. or other source?

A few places that advertise these kits actually skip the model years '73-'82 in their catalogues!

I don't have any real issues with mine, but I would like to upgrade and keep my old parts onboard in case.

Thanks in advance...

I found on Sierra's site where you can get complete distibutors but not the conversion kits. For an 8 cylinder that is. Someone has to manufacture a kit for that.

The reason the may have skip over those years is that Chrysler started putting on electronic ignition around that time .( they where the first ) . All Chrysler cars had it in 73 and may have started the marine at the same time. Your engine could be a 72 even if it was "new" in 73 or later very common to see this on boats as engine could be sitting around for a while before being used.

what to do ? a kit for a 72 may work. or got a place that sells used boat stuff ? you could pull a stock electronic ignition and harness off another engine as electronic ignition was very common on a Chrysler marine engine .

I'm away from my files... my marina mechanic was able to order from Can. supplier parts for electronic ignition and the pointless distributor. For my 1978 LM 318's

I wrote an e-mail to Sierra directly when I needed to know exactly which model was made for mine. I supplied the details on the distributor tag (serial number, make etc). They were very quick to reply with the model I needed. Then I ordered on-line from a Sierra supplier but can't remember who (sorry). You may also want to contact PerTronix (the manufacturer) directly first, then supply that number to Sierra in case they use different numbers and can cross refference to thiers.

You could try Anthony Keats Marine for info or parts http://www.anthonykeatsmarine.com... they are one of the few (if not only) official Chrysler Marine dealers in Ontario. They have been around for about 60 years.
