THERMOSTAT

Post by larglo »

Hi all,

I did a search on this subject and it came up with one item, even though I think I have asked this sometime ago myself, but forgot the response.

It was my belief that with a fresh water cooling system a 142 deg thermostat was to be used, and with a salt water system, a 160 deg stat was supposed to be used.

On Beacon Marine, it lists the 142 deg stat for Carter carbs and the 160 deg stat for Rochester carbs? No mention of what type of cooling system.

The one that came out of my engine was a 160 deg stat, and I'm in fresh water and I don't know what the heck my carburetor is? I don't even understand what difference it would make anyway?

I want to put the correct thermostat in this spring, so need some good advice from you all.
If the one I need from Beacon has the gasket with it, I'll get from them? By the way, mine is also 2 1/2" dia.

Thanks,

Larry

it is my understanding that you use a 142 in a raw water cooled system and a 160 in a closed system

I would go with the 142 in the raw water system raw water meaning salt or fresh .

if you have a closed/fresh water systen Meaning one that uses antfreeze the go with 160.
