Charging system is usually part of the generator windings. No separate alternator (yes on bigger units)

Look at the control panel. You should see 3 fuses the right is for the charging system., but some guys remove them , as they have their bank charger wired up to the gen battery.

I've got a 1988 10.8 Convertible with the 6.5 MCCK onan. There is one set of windings that makes the power and throught the control panel some is converted to D.C. to charge the battery (as well as supplying the D.C. power to run the unit). If you have no output (bad solenoid or relays usually) from the windings the power required to keep the unit running isn't there and it will simply shutdown as soon as you stop cranking it. If the unit continues to run but isn't charging the battery it is usually the charger diode that's cooked. A wiring diagram will show where it's located (approximately).

Another option is to simply put a small 120V battery charger by the genny and whenever the genny is running the charger will look after the start batttery.
