F-32 Project Boat Questions from a New Member

Post by F32Project »

I am looking at a F-32 for a project boat. No (zero) history on the boat. Hull looks great. Interior looks nice. It hasn't been in the water for 4 years. Bilge is really nasty. No survey yet. Assume: If I get a good deal and purchase the boat I would, for my own confidence on the water, have the engines (Crusaders 270) rebuilt (1500 hours) & electrical, fuel system inspected and brought up to better than new condition. Also, with the engines removed, remodel/clean the boat/bilge like many boats I see with owners who take care fo their craft. Questions: Remember the motor are out for rebuild - #1 Is replacing the stringers, or section of the stringers, a major job that an individual (or two) can perform? #2 Should the gas tanks come out for inspection (boat is 27 years old) #3 Any thought on the probablility of stringer rot on a 27 year old boat? I have wood working shop/tools and have built decks, fine furniture and remodeled three kitches and a few baths through the years. The rebuild project is driving me and not just getting a larger boat or I would buy a 10 - 15 year old boat and call it a day. Thank you for all advise.

Welcome aboard and good luck!

Are the stringers rotten? Most aren't, but need to b echecked.

Get a survey - they can check the stringers (moisture meter for eample).

tanks might be OK - have surveyor check them.

Agree onthe engine rebuild - as long as they're out - electrical and new wiring where you can. as well.

If you're looking for a project - I have an etra bedroom! ;-)

Good luck!

Welcome aboard, Check for soft spots on the flybridge floor and forward/ bow deck,/rotten core. Tanks full of crap/sludge but if the engines are out it's no biggy to clean/replace. Poke around for soft wood on the stringers/under the limber holes where the water drains to the center of the bilge, there's no fiberglass under those spots. Most anything else is small and fun to work on, A survey will tell you what's up.

run away... at the price of used boats out there now, you're way farther ahead financially picking up something already in the water and in good shape....even if you pick up the Trojan for free....(with the economy finally rebounding, wouldn't expect to have this situation for too much longer...but who knows.... :? )

To Peter's point, here was a FREE project boat that you might find a good motor for:
