Can you tell me about my boat?

Post by Boatchick »

So we boat this boat on a whim. One too many years of visting the Keels and Wheels Concour left my husband with a longing for a wooden boat.
All we know is that it is a 1969 36ft trojan.
how do i put in a picture???

Wow! is that a current picture? I owned that same model from 1981 to 2004. Kept it at Indian River Inlet, DE the whole time. Loved it and had a great time cruising, fishing and entertaining. It was a lot of work towards the end, but I loved that boat. It had a great ride and handled well. I had 440 chryslers. I had to rescrew the entire bottom after springing a plank running the inlet in 1996. Almost lost the boat except for the coast guard meeting me with a pump. If you have specific questions, I would be happy to respond, I still have the original owners manual for mine.

It is a current picture. Here's a photobucket link to a few more we took this week.
So is the boat considered a tri-deck? The guy we bought it from was calling it a sea voyager. Are they also called F36?
We paid $4800, which we thought seemed like a good deal. Thoughts on that?

Welcome to the forum. Nice boat and price might be good if you don't need any major work. It is very easy to put $1000's into repairs, especially if you have to pay someone else to do them. Did you get a survey?...........John

We didn't get a survey, but bought the boat from a customer. So I figured if it turned out to have much wrong I would just overcharge him next time :)
We own an enclosed car transport company, so I've got a mechanic that was able to clean the carbs, change the fluids, set the timing etc on the engine. The generator fires up with starting fluid but won't stay running so i'm guessing its a fuel line issue. The air conditoner runs cold but the pump isn't working. We have a hose hanging out a window at the moment. The marina wanted $1000 for a pump so I'm going to just yank it out and take it to my hydrolic shop to see if they can rebuilt it.

I want to have cushions made for the front and was hoping to use floation foam. Anyone have a website they recommend?

She looks great! Back in those days they would have either called the boat an Express Flybridge, or a Flybridge Sedan depending on whether there were a set of doors across the back of the salon.

It is not an F36 -- F36 is a specific model identifier where the 'F' stands for fibreglass...

BigD is definitely going to be a great help to you, plus there are a couple of other owners of old 36s on the forum as well. My father owned a similar 28' (built in the same year).

You should get a survey for safety sake (not just financial protection) -- you wanna know if the bottom is unstable or some ribs are about to go. If you are a couple of miles off shore, hit a rogue wave the wrong way, and something decides to pop open -- well, lets just say recouping repair costs could be the least of your worries... Spend the money for a survey by a qualified individual (members of SAMS should be reliable http://www.marinesurvey.org/index2.html) so you have a clear understanding of what you are dealing with. Plus, most Insurance companies would not cover a boat that old without a current survey.

sea voyager

Post by smiller192 »

It is a sea voyager, I have the original literature (PDF) and the description of the various models it was available in. I agree with having someone knowledgable look at the hull. When I had my incident, I was shocked at the effect corrosion had on the fasteners below the water line. And I was vigilant in maintaining the bottom of mine. I removed screw after screw where the threads were gone. If you are talking about the cushions for the v berth, I have mine and you are welcome to them if you pay the postage. If you are interested, I can send you pictures

Welcome aboard Camille. She's a beauty!! Smiller192 is correct, you have a Sea Voyager. Mine is basically the same boat with some subtle differences. As mentioned earlier, you should have someone knowledgable in wooden boats go through it and record any defficiencies, and suggest they compile the list in order of priority that need attention. Pick the project with the highest priority, get her done then move on to the next. Address structual and safety concerns first, comfort comes after you know you're safe. Don't know your financial situation but mine allows for one major project per season. Have been working on giving the interior a more modern flair; lighting, headliner, curtains etc. Also stripping exterior topsides for new paint, new glass flybridge apron, vinyl gone and replaced with glass/epoxy, replacing swim platform...etc etc...the list goes on. Don't think I'll be doing much boating this summer but I started these projects 'cause I wanted to spruce her up some so I'm in deep now!!

Do a Google search on Sea Hunt. You'll see some interesting stuff; Lloyd Bridges had a Sea Voyager as a family boat, and you'll see some "Sea Hunt" series TV footage of years past where they used a 1960 Trojan Sea Breeze for the show; great stuff.
She was a 1969 36 ft wooden beauty with big blue 440s that we'll miss forever.
And thanks to the gang, 2012 Trojan Boater Of The Year
