10 meter MC fuel gauges

Post by koviak »

1989 10 meter MC fuel sending units are not showing correct levels. I knew with age this would be an issue. Has any one replaced there sending units ? If so what type and length. I am looking at WEMA units as I have used these in the past on other boats.

Not a mid cabin, but an express cruiser with a single 242 gal tank.

I replaced my inoperative fuel tank sending unit in 2001, got it from the local boat supply store.

Ten years later it's beginning to act erratic again, so propbably time for another.

I added a deck plate above the sender as this was the only way to service this item. It'll make it very easy to do it again.

I will also have to add deck plates for access.

the sending unit is farther aft than the pick up tubes right? I remember looking at them when I replaced the anti-siphon valves. What if you made the deck plates behind the corner seat/wetbar a lot bigger.... maybe 10" and reach down.

Could you reach it then? They're hidden and would be easier than cutting the deck.

What type-size deck plate did you use.

No I will have to make a cut out for deck plate to access. Location would be under forward part of step on each side of cockpit. Kind of a oddball location but I have no one at the factory to complain to!!

Fuel sender - mine erratic too

Post by mhandley »

I have a 1985 - 10meter flybridge.

The fuel tank is under the rear deck.

Any ideas where the sender might be?

Is it a big job to replace it?

Looks like a pretty low cost item, no?

Toward the rear of the cockpit sole, on center just behind the leading edge of the bench seat on the express cruiser version.

I will try to post a picture sometime next week and will lay out a ruler on it.

The starting end of the tape measure is up against the rear of the cockpit floor.

Looking at the photo tells me that the fitting has yellowed quite a bit since it was installed in about 2001. Time for some of that Krylon plastic paint.

Sorry it took so long to get this up on the Forum

Here 'tis.

I have put up with my fuel sender as long as I could. I am taking RWS's advise and cutting an access to my sending unit. Does anyone know the specs or model number for my 1983 10 meter's sending unit? What size deck plate do I need to install the new sending unit. I'm looking at a 5" stainless deck plate on EBay.

The standard style of tank sender has a limited life.

I got about eight years out of the pair I last replaced in both tanks

This time I went with a different design sender with no real moving parts (except for the float).

Let's see if this copies over.

SSS/SSL20.0 SSS/SSL Diesel, Fuel or Water Level Sensor (4 - 60 in.)
Length: Length - 20.0 in. - $9.38 $49.38 x 1 $49.38

ok - here's a link:

http://www.wemausa.com/sensors/level-Fu ... hUClLvD-Uk

works perfectly !

One in my factory tank and one in my genny tank.

Confirm your size before ordering, and keep it at least 1" off the bottom.

Thanks, can I use my old gauge and what is the diameter of the mount? Can I get by with a 5" deck plate?

answers:

can you use this sender with the factory gauge - -YES

can you use a 5" deck plate - answer - depends on how accurate your hole is regarding lining up with the fuel tank sender.

something else..... this deck area is BALSA CORED.

Be sure to SEAL THE EDGES AND DECK PLATE PROPERLY.

Also, now would be a great time to re-bed the six fittings across the aft part of that deck as they are notorious for leaking and allowing water into the core.

Thanks for your help RWS. It was painful to cut a 5" hole into my rear deck. It will be worth not filling up every other trip for fear of running out of fuel. I am replacing the connectors when I get back from West Marine.

I REALLY love that design of fuel sender.

Now I have two.

Should last far longer than the traditional mechanical sending unit rheostat style
