New A/c and Genny
The Admiral said I could get a portable Cruisair a/c for the front hatch!! Picked one up Saturday for $475 with the hood and cover. Yesterday I ordered a new Honda eu2000i generator cheap from Wisesales.com for only $879.00, no tax and no shipping. Can't wait to try it out. Am planning an onboard nap this weekend and might overnight too.
My question is whether or not I need to run the genny on the swim platform or can I put it on the front deck? Oh and will it cool the cabin well enuff? It's a 4800 btu unit.

Putting it on the front deck would be a death wish ( fumes ) the swim platform would be the safest place , If you must do it . Get a carbon monoxide detector . ( even with a aproved marine genset the is install to specs )
I will say it again , A portable gen set has no place on a boat it belongs at home.

Personally, I'd never be able to sleep with the genny on. I have a Onan marine genny and 2 CO detectors, 1 wired to house battery, one portable unit with AAs. I test both yearly. I still would not trust them.

here's one from a quick Google search . . .
Carbon monoxide suspected in 3 deaths on NY boat
« National APShare
HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island say carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected in the deaths of two men and a woman found unconscious on a houseboat about 200 feet offshore.
A Suffolk County Police spokesman says the three were found about 9 p.m. Tuesday in Huntington Harbor and taken to Huntington Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Police say a portable generator found on the boat is believed to be the source of the fumes that caused the victims to lose consciousness. Detective Sgt. Thomas Groneman tells Newsday that carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected in their deaths.
Police have identified the victims as 43-year-old Juan Torres of Huntington Station, 45-year-old Patrick Franklin of Port Jefferson and his wife, 44-year-old Susan Franklin.

+1 on all the safety gear and the swim platform, I've ran my onan all night and only had a alarm go off once. The wind shifted and I was in a canal below the the banks. I placed my alarms high on low in the aft cabin. Boat has side exhaust for gen-set.. Just be smart about it, I'll never use mine again in a spot like that.

Portable generator
I would not use a portable generator. I boat out of Middle River on the Chesapeake Bay. Three years ago in my marina a lady was running a marine generator at the dock with the door open and killed three people on the boat. The next summer there was boats rafted up at anchor across from the marina and a guy was useing a portable generator on his swim platform to power up his A/C. The exhaust from the generator melted through the fiberglass and killed his friend in the aft cabin. Google Parkside marina on the Middle River baltimore.

welcome to the site Mike.... I take the boat with the marine gen-set didn't have working detectors ? and the blowers weren't on ? On the portable ones one has to keep common sense and then error on the side of safety.

i prefer not to have anything but a fan and blow the cool air in from the outside while we sleep and thats what we do most of the time but sometimes in the summer you just cant stand it.
i know that the set up will work well. i don t know if you have received your gen and tried it yet but. if not
place the gen on the swim platform and tie and lock it there. you can use a 30 to 15 amp adaptor to the shore power cord and then set your cruisair in the v berth hatch and it will keep it very nice even on low cool. on my f32 i can shut the door to the v berth and have to sleep with a blanket on. very nice. 80 degrees or so outside all night long and no telling how high the humidity is. can be a killer in tennessee in the summer. i do leave a battery charger on( i use an invertor for several items so the added benefit of charging the batteries is nice also) but turn off the water heater. no need to have that tax the generator overnight. you might consider adapting the eu2000 to run on an external fuel tank. very safe and easy to do. google this or email me if you want more info. on mine the honda doesnt like the econo mode on start up of the compressor of the cruiseair so i do turn my econo mode off. the gen will run it with no problems and wont bog down when the compreesor starts up
i think you will be very happy. by the way i dont use my onan generator on the boat while i am sleeping it is inside under the salon floor. i know that some dont like this honda on the platform as a solution either but nothing is perfect i guess.
