When we turn the breaker on to the A/C unit the compressor stays on indefininatley. We are also not getting any A/C. I plan on ripping it out of the boat this week, so what do you guys think? Easy fix or replacement needed? I'm 99% sure we can still get heat. It's just the A/C that isn't working. Also, a concern I have is can I run the boat (charter) while the unit is pulled out?
For the guys who have replaced thier units I see you are going with cruiseair or mermaid units. Which unit slides into the alloted space, and hooks up like the lunair the best and easiest? Also, where are the best deal out there?

If the compressor is running no unusual noises and you are getting heating mode. The problem will be in the change over valve operation.
It could be stuck
Energizing coil could be bad (replaceable)
Controls are not sending the correct signal to change to cooling. Bad connection faulty relays etc.

No issue with removing and running without the A/C connected. I would cap the pump thru-hull for now and close the intake seacock.
I have a mid cabin and just installed a 12k mermaid. It cools the cabin great but I'm not overly impressed with the noise. It's not really that much quieter than my old Lunaire unit. Just before the compressor kicks on, there's a loud "click" which must be some sort of relay.
Once it's running it's not too bad. Unfortunately, the mid cabin units are in the v berth. I added mat insulation inside the entire box which probably helped some but overall not that thrilled.

First determine the cost of repair before replacing a unit that might provide you one or more seasons of service.
My old unit had multiple leaks, requuired an annual freon charge, and had issues with the relays.
In addition to that it was really rusty.
It was not worthy of the cost to repair.
The new 16,000 BTU Cruiseair unit with optional heat pump in the express cruiser is awesome.
Does a great job and is quiet in the express cruiser and reliable.

if it's not a midcabin you might want to take a look at the redesign we did on our 1983 10 meter International Express Cruiser.
