Things that go bump in the afternoon....

Post by MattSC »

I finally was able to get some free time and decided to take the boat out for a ride and yep, hit a submerged branch. It came up for a few seconds then settled back under. Luckily I was going slow enough as the area I was going through always has a bunch of junk in the water. It appears like I might have lucked out as I don't have any vibration and my rudder appears to be functioning OK. I'm going to take a dive off the boat tomorrow and give it a quick check.

This got me to thinking about getting another spare prop. I currently have a Michigan Wheel 14 x 10" cupped Nibral Prop. Looking at the Michigan Wheel website I noticed that they have come out with a successor to the Dyna-Jet called the DJX. http://www.miwheel.com/propellers/inboa ... ropellers/ .

Taken from Michigan Wheels website

DJX

0.61 E.A.R. - Diameter range: 12" - 21"

"DJX" are an evolution of the tried and true Dyna-Jet and Dyna-Quad series propellers. The designs have been modified to be better suited to highly loaded, limited tip clearance applications. All "X" series propellers are CNC machined to facilitate very accurate and repeatable product. The availability of this series will be progressive, with additional sizes being added regularly. Availability will be size specific, in a range of bores, and without or with all degrees of cup.

DJ355 (What is currently on my boat)

0.56 E.A.R. - Diameter range: 9" - 40"

For smaller inboard crafts, the 3 blade DJ355 offers the best value for smooth, reliable, and quiet performance. This skewed, constant pitch, zero offset series is low maintenance, but meets the performance design criteria of a wide range of applications. Application considerations would be as an option to the Michigan Dyna-Jet.

E.A.R is defined by WildCat Propellers as: E.A.R. Expanded Area Ratio
This is a ratio of the actual area of the propeller blades to the area of the circle described by the diameter of the blades. This is sometimes referred to as B.A.R. Blade Area Ratio. Normally E.A.R is a higher percentage than D.A.R.

I submitted a request into Michigan Wheel asking if there would be a noticeable difference between the two props. In theory the DJX appears that it might be a better choice. Something I'm considering giving a test if it's available for my application.

Does anyone have experience with a DJX propeller?

we have 2 spares, a rh & a lh we onlykeep them on board when going far away as these 20x20 guys are heavy. Spare shaft comes along for trips too.

THe original owner kept 2 spare props and a spare shaft onboard.

The idea being if they were there, he would probably never need them.

I do have a spare prop on board hoping I won't need it, (it isn't Nibral) though I am a bit curious if the DJX prop would be more efficient. I like the idea of the spare shaft.

As for the branch, it looked to be about 3-4" in diameter, I was wondering if it was attached to something larger though....I can verify it wasn't Hoffa
