How much $$ would it take?

Post by JuiceClark »

Ok Trojan fans, I have a friend who worked for Viking for 20 years who has an 80' x 50' building and is considering fixin' up a boat or two for resale. For the first project, I said I'll consider financing the deal so we can see how it goes for the next one when we sell the boat.

So, how much $ do you think it would take, with him/us doing the work, to turn this:

into this:

We'd offer $25k for the beater and will only buy it if the 6v92s turn over. I figure we could get $125k for it in great, refinished condition. I doubt the hull's core has been compromised. But if it has...forget it.

I've was lucky enough to have been aboard a few 13 meter series vessels. I actually considered buying one that was for sale in Ft Myers a few years ago.

Among numerous other issues, that particular vessel suffered from a severe case of deck rot. Water had gotten under the fiberglass and rotted the plywood/balsa underlayment.

I've also noticed that these vessels seem to languish on the market for (sometimes) years. Remember, while they really were SOMETHING in thier day, most folks today do not remember or appreciate these fine vessels and thier characteristics.

What it translates into is a wonderful opportunity for a knowledgable buyer to get a tremendous vessel value for less of an initial investment.

I would venture to say that this one could be picked up (salvage) for less than 20K.

Bottom line, get a survey and determine what the real selling price would be as well as the cost of your time and the cost to carry the investment and store the vessel until it really does sell.

I think you'd do better buying and flip a house. Both markets are soft, buyers markets right now, but a house is not the depreciable asset that a 20+ year old boat is.

pity that poor boat

I'm having trouble finding a good real estate steal down here. Hope one pops-up.

Sad to see that ol' girl sitting there isn't it. If the flybridge core is rotten - no biggy. But anywhere else...deck or hull...it's done for. Funny how they could make a boat with such awesome, fiberglass stringers then troublesome balsa coring everywhere else. My buddy would offer $8k and tear it apart. I couldn't watch that.

With those twin Detroits, generator, helm, half-tower, fuel tanks, steering, assorted hardward, galley stuff, etc, etc, etc...he'd have a field day in his quest to recreate a 46' Key West #1.

They were amazing vessels.

Don't know if it's true but I have been told that the 13 was much superior to the 12 as it didn't have the prop pockets.

Any International above the 10 Meter does have a cored hull which is something I would be concerned about considering the age and the fact that most of those size vessels have been kept in the water for over 20 years.

I love the layout of the 11 meter!

Many of those were powered with 454's and would be wonderful candidates for a repower to diesel.

Offer $20k

Post by rossjo »

Offer $20k - add $100k - sell for $150k? Not a great profit, but you would get touse it while the project went on.

If this was a more well known hull (Bertie), you could do a quick cleanup ($30-40k) and re-sell ... but then again thats why is on the market listed for $20k.

Damaged boats are a dime a dozen ... if you have the time ...
