time for some input all responses welcome and encouraged .

As I am clueless to motors/horsepower the question I have is being the 1979f26 came with a 318 engine would switching to the 273 engine allow this boat to get on plane? what kind of speed in general did the 318 allow this boat to go to and what would be a safe projection for the aprox speed of the 273. again just a vague ans. I do realize weight , weather , current will play a role just looking for some general ans. "if possible to do so "

I did have the original owner of this engine over to the house today , he is a mechanic at our local marina and said the engine 273 should fit right in there with no mods other then possibly some elbows at the exhaust.

What horsepower is the 273? With the 225 hp 318, cruise is around 18 knots. I'm not sure you would want to go much slower than that.

I don't think you will have trouble planing . it will take long to get on top and of course lose some top end . One the last (FEW ) of the 273s I saw was in a Trojan back in 1980 ? I believe it was a F but not sure. can ember much else about it . you should back some pitch out of you prop or if its cupped remove the cup to make life easier on the engine .

I believe the f25 or 26) also had a merc 188 engine (188hp 302) so would not be far off from that as I believe the 273 is around 180hp w/a 2 barrel

That a really good ? As I have the 318 but it is tHe 235hp actually 233 says Trojan specs. I'm putting the 225 hp in replacement. I am interested in reading how this post goes, lot to learn here. I'm gonna look up the 273, interested to see what it is and what it puts out, I can imagine that I could ask a lot of dumb questions on this one. But I won't haha just thinking smaller, lower and more gas $. I'm probably wrong though

Do smaller motors burn less Fuel ? You would think so and in theory the should . But ( always a but) In many case the smaller motor will have to work harder to do the job. So it could burn more fuel.

Just something to think about .

What I posted on the 273 and 188 etc. is from memory so don't asume its fact, its just the best I can remember .

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure, just seemed if you put a smaller motor to push the same weight, you would lose some where. Engine life like you said and deff gas, I was wandering if it would push for higher RPM that would stress everything in my mind, kinda like these kids that take 4 clyinder Honda engines and push 400+ hp out of them. Crank blows out plus lots more and fuel is unreal.. In cars

no replacement, can't be substituted
displacement, size of engine....as in bigger is better.
