Freshwater system connection

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 1985 10 Meter International Sedan and am having trouble figuring out how to connect pressurized water from a dock hose to feed my freshwater system. I found the hose input connection on the port side by the washdown outlets and connected the hose along with a pressure-reducing valve. This doesn't seem to feed any water into the system. Is there a valve somewhere that needs to be opened that I have overlooked? The freshwater system works fine when running from the pump and pulling from the storage tank. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this is my first boat and I'm a complete noob!

if its similiar to mine its basically a rv type water inlet with a back flow preventer built in the inlet. using a spring and seat to keep the water from coming out when you turn on the water pump on the boat to pressureize your fresh water system. if it is then you should be able to take something and remove the metal inlet screen and with no pressure on the boat side push in the valve carefully to see if it is moving. its probably plastic if its not moving then you know no water will be going in. maybe it hasnt been used awhile and is stuck . replacement is cheap from any rv store

on my 1983 10 Meter Express, the port side connection is for the RAW WATER WASHDOWN. (male garden hose thread)

The FRESHWATER INLET is on the STARBOARD side on mine. (female garden hose thread)

You never know what a previous owner might have done...

Also make sure you have a check valve in the system to protect the fresh water pump.

The freshwater pump breaker needs to be turned OFF so that it just becomes a pass through for the dockside connection.

The pump is the checkvalve....

Turns out the check valve in the dock freshwater connection line was jammed shut. I poked a small rod through it to break it open and that solved the issue.

Anyone have a recommendation for a in-line filter to put at the inlet connection? Will any old RV in-line filter work fine? How about a treatment procedure for sanitizing the freshwater lines? I'm not looking to get flesh-eating bacteria because the previous owner didn't keep things clean.

In the spring I use bleach in the tank and lines ( 25 to 1 ) then pressurize the system for two hours after I run it through every spigot hot and cold and make a few cubes in the ice maker, i am not sure if that is the proper mix but it seems to work.

i use roughly the same routine as my neighbour mike does at the beginning, middle and end of the season. i also run, once a week, water through the hot water tank by just turning on one hot water tap and flush it clean. i have a 21 gallon water heater, and sometimes it can get a little 'sour'. by running water through it, the 'schmutz' clears it's way out. as for dock side water filters, i've used this for years, available at any rv store or walmart.
i connect a good drinking water Y connector similar to this at the dock. one side for wash down, the other dedicated to the onboard water system.
also, what i strongly recommend, is find a drinking water safe 5/8" hose to connect from the dock to the boat. 5/8" gives better water flow in my opinion.
