engine oil capacity
Today I added the engine oil and transmission fluids to the new engines getting ready for the startup next saturday. The port side engine took 5 quarts to read full on the dip stick. The starboard engine after 5 quarts barely got the tip of the dip stick wet. Both dip sticks are the same size. The oil pans are the exact same. Why would this happen? does a rev rot engine hold more oil than a std rot engine? I wouldnt think so. I dont get it. Im going to take a coat hanger wire and stick down both dip stick tubes to see if that reads the same when the wire touches bottom.

thats why i dont get it. everything is as it was. the pans came off the old engines along with the tubes and dip sticks. the only thing i didnt do when i drained the old engines of their oil was to measure the amout to see if it was the same. when the old engines were in the boat the oil levels were checked and measured correct on the sticks. im gonna check the angle of the new engines. maybe we got one a little higher in the front. i just dont know.
when we put the new ones in, it took a couple days to get the alignment the way we wanted.

Obviously tube depth is important. But here are the capacities for:
Cast aluminum pan = 6 qts plus filter and lines if filter remote mounted
Stamped metal pan = 5 qts plus filter and lines if filter remote mounted
Dip sticks;
Aluminum Cast pan should have dip going into the pans side using a compression fitting.
Stamped metal should have the dip stick going in a hole generally below and near the fuel pump.
Another note cast pans vs stamped pans used different length pickup tubes and foot.
Be sure what you had is what you have now and should be the same using same pans, pickup tube, dip sticks and dip stick tube and location.

larry thats what it is. like i said, i didnt change anything. everything is as it was. each pan, tube and dip stick went from the old engine to the new.
today i will check angle of the engine to see if it is higher in the front than the other. add 1 more quart to see where im at. other than that im not sure what to check.
i have the cast aluminum pans, the dip stick is on the side. it is the way it was.
could it be the way she is blocked up? she looks pretty level.

well that is what it is. today i checked the angle. they put that engine in about 1 inch more fwd than the port side. and about 1 inch higher. even the flame arrester on the carb is hitting the foam on the hatch. my dad and a mechanic did the engine install while i was in the bahamas. why didnt they notice this? My dad wouldnt know anything about it. but that marine mechanic should of noticed it. i will be looking for him tomorrow. this has to be corrected right away. the stbd engine needs to be moved back and lowered. not sure how this will affect the holes drilled for the engine mounts. will have to redrill. im hoping i can just use the adjustments on the motor mounts to lower the engine first. to see if i can get the oil to read correct before i attemp to move it back. DAMN IT MAN!!!

+1. This may have been done to make up for an issue with strut alignment. Either removed for some reason and installed wrong or took a hit that threw alignment of the strut off and rather than getting into removing the strut, they moved the engine. Not the way to go.
She was a 1969 36 ft wooden beauty with big blue 440s that we'll miss forever.

If an engine requires X amount of oil should it not be that the dip stick is calibrated to that qty: and not the other way around.... adding oil to suit dipstick mark?
I was always told to add specification qty: of oil and re-mark dip stick to suit the angle of engine in a boat..... is this not the correct philosophy?
