another engine question

sorry but its that time , I have another line I'm looking into on the elusive motor. I saw one in my area that is a 1987 350 mercruiser . I was told if I was going to put a chevy engine in my 1979 trojan f26 that it would have to be a "bobtail" ? can someone explain what this type of motor is ? thanks

"Bob Tail" means a complete turn key engine , less trans

would a 1987 350 mercruiser work in my boat? see once advertised local but want to make sure before I get it . it came out of a searay ,I have a 440 tranny will this hook up to it or would I need to purchase a tranny that was original to the boat? thanks again for any help

You have a 440 now so I don't see why it won't fit the boat .
Do you know what trans you have ? Most likley it will work with the right bell housing But need to know what you have for sure . If you can't find a tag, post a photo and I can ID it for you .

the 440 has useless block , I was to the understanding that you couldnt stuff a 440 into that boat , something about the shear weight and the possibility of the rpm on that motor would be to much for the 1"prop shaft and prop. maybe tearing it off under load?

I got some more info on the chevy engine , it came out of a 87 seary 24ft weekender and is "standard rotation" so whats my next step ?

So that 350 out of a 24 W/E is a Merc marinized GM 5.7.

It was likely mated to an Alpha One from the factory unless the original purchaser had paid out the money for a Bravo upgrade. Either way you are looking at a 'bobtailed' 5.7, which like Paul said, means you have to supply your own drive. Also as he said, if you have the right bellhousing its a bolt on affair.

WTF exactly do you have in there right now? We know you are looking for a new power plant, but the real question is what are you trying to bolt it to? That info will go a long way in helping all of us help you decide which are the best/easiest/most practical choices for your repower.

If I were you I'd be looking for a 318, 360; or 305, 350. Anything else, IMO, is going to be more hassle than its worth in your application and also for your financial/enjoyment budget. Just my $0.02

there is nothing in there right now , thats why I need an engine, originally the f26 came in my model year with a 318. I bought the boat and it had a blown 440 in it , I removed the engine and looking to put this 350 in it and probably purchase a velvet drive tranny from bob at beacon marine

I was saying if you have a 440 in it the 350 should fit not to put the 440 bac. you will need a bell housing and a coupler if the engine came from a out drive boat . Its possible you may have velvet drive now . a photo would help id it , in fact photos of the engine room would too , just to see what set you have now .

Cheapest/easiest - just put another Chrysler big block back in it.

Worked before - will fit again and work.

If its a 1" shaft, just don't run it hard. Put a 2 barrel on it instead of a 4-barrel if you're conservative - you can pick these up cheap (free from someone here perhaps).

I'll get back tonight from work and get some pics in here . Ive exhausted my search for a 318. I'd much rather put a newer"ish" engine in like the 1987 I'm loooking at . in the meantime I have everything that bolts onto the 440 chrysler that will sit in the garage and be sold off as needed. so if anyone is in need of any parts let me know I'll be glad to help you out. I speak from experience trying to find marine parts that are 30+ yrs old is a pain in the a**. anyway thanks for all the input

yep back for lunch, lucky I'm working within 2 miles of home today ,

looks like if I wanted that engine with its standard rotation I would need

a LH prop, bell housing, motor mounts, transmission and possible a flywheel and starter

will still get some pics on here tonight "wife willing "

If finances allow, it may be better to purchase an engine and transmission package. A 305 or 350 would be a good engine for that boat. Just make sure the engine height is acceptable. Others have used transmissions with angled shafts to alleviate the height problem.
