Analog to NMEA 2000

Post by Jfreeman1412 »

Hello
On our new (to me) 1980 F-30 all the gauge are up on the flybridge and inside the cabin there are only RPM gauges. I would like to set up digital gauges down below. Think I got a good hold on it after some research, but would like to hear what people have to say about installation and performance of these.

Here is what I am looking at

I put in a Noland RS-11 unit a few years ago. This device does analog to NEMA 2000. I made all the connections at the screw terminal block behind the lower helm. You could attach to the back of the gauges on the bridge just as easy. Then I bought Lowrance LMS520 displays off ebay for about 1/2 of retail. Simple to install and pretty cost effective compared most systems. I also added Lowrance fuel flow meters at $60 ea.

How do you like the RS-11? I was looking at that one but it only allowed 2 reference points for programing. Do you find them to be pretty accurate when compared to your analog gauges?

How do you like the Fuel flow sensor? Is it something you find yourself using alot? I am on the fence about that as well. I think we are going to run these off a PC, in which case I would have to integrate the fuel flow sensor into the conversion box, and that doubles the price of conversion kit I would need. Thanks for the insight.

I like the RS11. it has 2 x RPM inputs and 4 analog inputs. The calibration was pretty simple and the digital readouts match the guages.
I think the whole install took me about 4-5 hrs. It was a couple of hours terminating a bunch of wires and attaching to the screw blocks in the wiring harness. Then, I ran a NEMA 2000 cable up the cable trough up to the flybridge. There I installed 2 of the Lowrance units, one for each engine. I run depth on one, GPS on the other, and then over-lay the guages on top of the depth/GPS images as a background. I guess if you are trying to get guages.

Well....I'll let you know how it goes. Picked up a 520 and a RS11and will attempt to rig it today. Where did you get such a good deal on your fuel flow sensors?

Do you know if it is possible to run both engine guages one one head unit?

Well
It went pretty well. We got most of the stuff dialed in. I have a temp guage that is stuck at 129. And am trying to figure out the RPM's or find out how many Pulses per rotation my motors has.

I picked up the fuel sensors in the closeout bins at Gander Mountain. I wish now I had bought several more.

You can run both engine readings on one display. I ran with one the season I put it in. then, found a 2nd over the winter on craigslist.
