Engine dies when put into gear.

Post by Jfreeman1412 »

Hey guys my starboard engine dies and dosent like to idle when in gear. We adjusted the linkage to have it idle higher(1200-1300) Rpms. But it clunks into gear. When it gets going its fine and will run for hours at 3100rpms. (Put on 110 miles today:). Any thoughts? Thanks.

Sounds like the idle mixture off could be trash in the carb idle circuit or a vacuum leak . Have you tried ajusting the mixture ( not the idle speed ) ?

I am having same problem. . . It has something to do with the carb which is new. I have my mechanic lined up to make adjustments.

Probably trash in the idle circuit, which has already been mentioned. Get that idle down or you'll be rebuilding that gear if you keep shifting it at 12 or 1300 RPM's.

++1 Shouldn't be masking a runability issue by increasing idle above spec. Transmissions are expensive!

Yeah I know. I changed out the fuel filter and water separator and it seems to be better. Not perfect but, got the idle down. Are the adjustments on a Rochester quad jet inside the first two butter flys? Can some one fill me in if this is correct and how to adjust them? Thanks! Having a different carb issue with the other motor at higher speeds but I'll post a new thread about that! Thanks for your help!

They are on the base of the carb in front .

They should be adjusted about 1 1/2 turns out. Turn them all of the way in (to bottom but not tight) then back them out to this position and run the engine. Once the engine is running and at operating temp, turn them in until the rpm's start to climb. Then out until the engine starts to idle rough. the perfect setting is right between these two points. The general rule of thumb though is as I stated at the beginning, 1 1/2 turns out. (on a sound engine with a clean fuel system)
