tranny question

ok probably a dumb one but here goes. I have the tranny out of the boat and bell housing off. when I spin the end that hooks to the prop shaft the end that hooks to the motor spins in the same direction. when I shift the lever and spin it shouldn't they turn opposite? no matter what position the shifter has been placed in the whole thing end to end always spins in the same direction. what am I not getting here ?

Thats normal , its due to clutch drag . That tranny works off of hydraulic pressure to engage the clutches . Spinning it by hand you can't spin it fast enough to get any pressure . You would need to spin it at least several hundred rpm and in the correct direction . The shifter is really just a valve that sends fluid under pressure to the forward or reverse clutches depending on position of the lever .

No rpm=no pressure= no clutch engagement = no shift .

Its like a auto trans with one speed , not like a manual trans

thanks for the ans. knew it had to be something I was missing. sent some pics to Bob to see if its the type I need for the boat and maybe get lucky and check that off the 100 things left to obtain
