10 Meter Fuel Pump Issue Solved

Post by FLRAVEN »

Since I purchased my 10 Meter Express last year the starboard engine has started to bog at anywhere from 3300 to 3500 rpm. I had changed the fuel filter and checked the non-return valve at the fuel tank, but neither had any affect on the bogging issue. It wasn't really a big deal for me as I don't normally run over 3200 rpm anyways. Then last month we were out for an evening cruise and stopped to eat dinner. We were off the boat for maybe one hour and then started it back up to head home and the starboard engine cut out. I could restart it but it would only stay on for 5 seconds to a minute. Last week I ran the boat all afternoon with no problems and then stopped for dinner again on the way home. After about an hour we got back on the boat and the same thing happened again. So Friday night I changed out the mechanical fuel pump on the starboard engine. We went out for the day Saturday and the bogging issue is gone as is the engine cutting out after a short break. I believe that the radiating heat from the engine when the cooling system wasn't running caused the diaphragm in the already marginal fuel pump to not behave as it should.

fuel pumps generally give no warning when they go.

I replaced both of mine on my 454's when I got the boat.

I figured they were due after 18 seasons.

As I recall, the starboard side was not much fun.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun changing it out in this lovely south florida August weather. But the payoff was that I got to make it to the big raft up the next day. :D
