Helm leaking fluid.

Helm leaking fluid.
I had the Hard Eight out over the weekend fishing with some of my Army buddies from Iraq. During the weekend noticed a small stream of fluid leaking from right behind the wheel. It wasn't constant or a lot of fluid, just every so often would have to wipe it off. Is there a schematic for this? Where do I begin this repair? Should I start by taking the wheel off or is it something I do from the back side?

Re: Helm leaking fluid.
Sounds like you need to replace the shaft seal . Just did mine in the spring .

You may want to take a look at my link here: http://www.trojanboats.net/wforum/viewt ... f=1&t=7786
I put a lot of info that I found on the rebuild of my F32.

seal is bad. its an easy and cheap fix. I did mine this past year. I believe the rebuild kit was around $30. Hardest part was removing the helm. will take about 1-2 hours to remove, rebuild and replace. I think I have the instructions on my laptop (which is currently locked up and being difficult!) if I can find any info I will post it for you.

Re: Helm leaking fluid.
Yep, common problem and fairly easy fix. The hard part is reaching the copper (3/4") fittings which are behind the helm. If you remove the small access panel at the end of the overhead cabinet you can see them but they're pretty much out of reach. I removed my VHF and went in that way.
An access panel under the helm wheel would be ideal and something I still might add. Not something that'll leave you stranded so you can plan for a repair.

If you take down some of the headliner the bottom of the access behind the cabinet can be removed. its real easy to reach if you do this. here is a pic from the aftcabin. its where the cord is dropping down.

Oh yeah, I remember you posting that before. There's an access panel already there? One of those things you'd never know unless you removed the headliner.
