Water leak

Post by Wes »

I have a 10 meter 1983 flybridge/aftcabin and have found a water leak in the starboard main salon window. The water seems to be coming down through one of the mounting bolts holding the bottom window channel in place. I shutter at the thought of having to tear the whole window system apart. Has anyone had a similar situation and found a simple solution?
Thanks for any help.

I have a 12M with water leaks on the starb side as well...

I am planning on pulling the windows out in the spring and resealing... I have posted to a couple of forums but have found nothing about removing the windows. If I find anything I will post a response

Water leak

Post by Wes »

Thanks Tom,

I'm going to try loosening a bolt within a week or so. I'll let you know what I find out. My leak is coming down a bolt that looks like it is in the bottom of the vertical support in the center of the sliding starboard window.
Where are you located? I'm in Clinton CT.

I have the same problem with the port side of my F32. It looks like there is a rubber washer up underneath between the nut and the 'glass which is supposed to seal everything. I was thinking maybe the nut is loose or the washer is dried out and no longer sealing.

I was toying with the idea of running a bead of silicone caulking around the perimeter of the window frame to prevent water from getting in there in the first place.

Hi Wes,
I keep my boat in Newburyport MA, when the weather gets a little warmer I plan on starting to pull it apart. I just bought the boat and will be re-fitting the boat so I may remove all the windows so that I can start off fresh.

Everything I have read says that if windows are seated correctly you should only need to bed them, there should be no reason for external caulking. I only used external caulking because I was desperate to address the leak until I could get the boat shrink wrapped. 5200 is pretty much permanent kinda scares me for windows

Hi Wes,

Did you have any luck with the window??? I called Marine Tech today and asked John (the guy use to work at Trojan) how to remove the windows and said he had no idea. Now that encouraging when the guy that worked at Trojan does not know....

He did say it may be attached is a "T" bolt....

The other question I have is how can you get the window track out...

I am also going to call Taylor Made

Hi Tom,

I didn't even try to take the window track out. It looks impossible to me without destroying it. There are 4 or 5 bolts coming down through the bottom of the window frame. I didn't try to push the bolts up through the track. What I did to stop the leak through the track and down the bolts was to mix up some West System epoxy and put a little on top of each of the bolts to seal them. It looks as though it worked. After all the rain and snow we've had lately about the only dampness I can find is from condinsation.

If you need to take the track out, I would make sure I have some kind of track that will fit in the window area and then cut the original track and push it up from under the window frame. I had to take the whole starboard side cabinet apart to get to the track bolts. Of course that let me find all the other things I needed to repair in the general area. Good luck and keep in touch.

Thanks Wes.

I have already ripped the whole interior of the boat so I have pretty good access. This weekend I am going to take some of the nuts off from the bottom and remove the plywood backer behind the nuts and see what I am up against. At this point I think I am going to take the approach you took.

I'll let you know what I find....
