Price Check on Boat Survey

Post by LandVF36 »

I am changing insurance carriers and as part of the process I need to get a new survey. Last one was in 2006/7 and I paid $270. Best quote Im getting now in MN is $780 !! I told him I wasn't selling the boat, I just wanted a survey :D
I thought in this economy there isn't any inflation going on. Just curious what folks have paid recently.

That seem about normal , But you could check around explaining you just want a insurance survey . I got a quote from Boat US this week and they sent me a form for a self survey . In the past they required a full survey . I quote every year because in the past I had a few big jumps and had to switch . So want to be prepared .

Are you using the same surveyor or a different one?

I was able to get the cost of my insurance survey down a bit because I offered up a list of all the engine specs, serial numbers, hours, electronics, etc. He did his thing with the hammer and the moisture meter. If you can save him an hour or two of work, he may drop the price a little.

$780! Wow, part of the reason I've never had a survey done

Paid $18.00 / ft two years ago in WI for a pre-purchase survey. This did not include engines or sea trial. Just a hull and systems survey.

Not sure what you are getting but it works out to $21.66 / ft

I question the cost of The 2006/7 survey at $270. that would have been low back then. As a marina operator it surprises me how insurers vary on their requirements. Some want full condition surveys every 5 years on boats older than 10 years and others just ask for photos. I suggest that if you do not understand the workings of your boat a full condition survey every 5 years could save you life.

Similar to BoatUS, I got a policy from Seaworthy (A Berkshire Hathaway Co). They allowed a self survey with photos. I got a declared value policy for $35K plus all the normal liability coverage, medical, and even winter freeze protection at an annual cost of $575.

Land V that seams like a great deal, I value my F32 under $8,000, paid $5,500 for it but I'm more interested in getting liability rather than insuring the boat. All state won't insure it, it's too old, they insure my 2 houses and 3 cars, go figure
