1987 13 Meter Express Hardtop - Newly Acquired
Just thought I'd post some pics up. Don't mind the messy look, these were taken during the clean-up/winter storage prep.
Looking forward to having this on the water come spring!
Engines are Detroits 6-71ti's from what I can tell. They have the turbos.
More pics to come!

ReelWild - That's basically the way I remember her. Thanks for the added photos.

@Rick Correct. The pneumatic function. Not sure if/how it works, but looking forward to testing everything out. I figure there will be some issues with the boat, given the age and was willing to take the risk and fix things up accordingly.
Cheers.
Cheers.

Re: 1987 13 Meter Express Hardtop - Newly Acquired
Reel,
When I had the pleasure of spending a couple of really enjoyable hours examining you're boat, it was a warm spring day with lots of snow patches still on the ground at the marina. I don't know if she sold at that time or if the owner ended up keeping her until you purchased the boat.
The day I was there she was in her cradle and I was able to take my good old time examining the hull. These boats have that famous hull shape and the glass appeared to be in excellent condition. I believe she wasn't used very often.
The broker mentioned that a lot of Toronto boat owners will run out into Lake Ontario and spend an enjoyable day anchored or drifting. It's such a huge lake and there are essentially few places to go to, if you're only out there on a weekend day. If an owner is feeling like relaxing it's just easier to get out there and float around for the day, then come back in to the marina that night. This fact contributes to low actual engine hours and higher generator hours on a lot of Toronto area boats. I suppose this situation occurs literally everywhere. But for you to be the owner of those Detroit's with low hours, I can't help but think it'll turn into a good situation for you. I know several members here will be concerned about underuse, but I'm usually pretty happy with low miles on cars and low hours on boats.
IMV, there is so much room literally everywhere in and on that boat, you'll be able to set it up any way that suits your purpose.

Red Flag !! Your coolant is wrong for the Detroit's You need a coolant that meets Detroit specs with the right SCAs .Without it cavation can cause cylinder sleeve damage . flush it and get the right stuff in it . Not sure if your gen set is sleeved but it would not hurt to do the same too it .
I have to ask what oil is being used in it ?

Thanks for the concern. Not sure if I need to be but I will check into it. It was/is still winterized and out of the water, will be flushing it before it goes back in. I will definitely ask about the oil. Thx!

Did you have a pre-purchase survey?
Did you have a separate engine survey?

First of all, I have to say that I am far from an expert on Detroit Diesels.prowlersfish wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:43 am Red Flag !! I do have an early Ford Powerstroke 7.3L that requires SCA in the coolant and I have done research on keeping this engine safe from cavitation damage to the cylinders. I run a yellow (looks yellow/green to me) coolant that is OAT based and also add a SCA additive that is blue. My coolant mixture looks similar to the coolant that ReelWild has in his engines. You can purchase test strips to determine your SCA level and I test every six months to see if I need to add any.
Without testing, you cannot be sure there is no SCA in his coolant. That said, the coolant in the photo is probably not on the DD list of approved coolants.

Probably be ok using a green coolant with a SCA . I just like using a OEM spec coolant in a sleeved engine . Cheap insurance

Where do you buy your test strips? Which brand do you use?
