215 MerCruiser Drive / transmission
I am trying to find out any info I can about the 215 transmission. I have a 1972 Trojan with 351 ford engines and these transmissions. I don't know if they are straight mechanical drive or hydraulic? I don't know what oil they take if any or will I be putting oil on a clutch and they take no oil ? I do know that one of them is very poor going into gear slow going in to reverse and sometimes not at all ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

You would have a BW velvet drive or a paragon trans Bothe use ATF , I prefer dexron post a photo I could tell you what gear you have . And Both are hydraulic .

Re: 215 MerCruiser Drive / transmission
So my port side transmission will not go into reverse It seems sluggish in forward but did drive the boat all day yesterday. Reverse was working sluggish before now not at all. I filled the oil to proper level but no reverse all day. Would this be a clutch plate problem or oil pump? I see on line it looks like there are separete plates for reverese? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreated.

Re: 215 MerCruiser Drive / transmission
Could the clutch plates or bad internal seals . Te seals leaking will cause the clutches to slip or not engage , burning them up if bad enough . Sounds like its time to pull it and go through it (or have it done )
