How fast with this diesle?

I inherited a 1977 Trojan 26 with a fly bridge.
I’ve always owned smaller outboard boats, and I am very ignorant when it comes to inboard boats,and boats of this size in particular. Plus, it has a Yanmar JHE marine diesle, around 44Hp. Before I put money into it, I was wanting to get an estimate of what cruising speed I might achieve with this small engine. I’m thinking that getting on plane will be out of the question. I figure 10 knots max, in a purely displacement mode. Anyone got thoughts on this? Previous owner is deceased, so I have nothing to go on. If any of you men have any thoughts as to speed and/or fuel consumption, I sure would appreciate it. I really want to save this old boat. Needs a little work, but engine does start.

I believe this is a sailboat engine

Unlikely you will achieve planning speed

That said, your fuel economy at displacement speed will be off the charts !

Suggest you perform a full service and REPLACE THE IMPELLER.

Cruising at hull speed (about 6.5 knots ) you will burn about 1 gal a hour . Top speed would likely be a little above 10 knots with a fuel burn of 3 gal a hour . I ran the info on a calculator . The boat / engine will be happiest at hull speed or less . Anything above hull speed and you start to plow water .


Sounds like a cool boat just don't be in a hurry

Here’s a few shots of the boat. She is very dirty, but she is structurally sound. Had not been ran in about a year when I got it. A quick battery charge, and the little yanmar fired right up. Shut her down after 3 min of a nice idle, with the intention of not cranking her again until All fluids and filters are changed and impellers are replaced. A clean fuel cell with fresh diesle is in order too. I included a photo of the trailer to get some opinions from you men. Most of the wobble rollers need replacing, as well as all keel rollers. Gonna get expensive pretty quick. If any of you folks can supply dimensions and bunk layout of a trailer with runners for this boat, I think I’m gonna go that rout. I welcome any and all opinions and advice from you guys.

Other than the DOCK LADDER on the transom, this boat has a great deal of great possibilities, as long as you realize it's limitations regarding wind, current and seas.

Don't think she's a candidate for haulover inlet

If you don't know what that is, just go to YOUTUBE and type in those two words

Otherwise she can be a really sweet, economical boat for some PURPOSEFUL fun.

Great looking boat , It should clean up nice . Looks like someone put a lot into this boat at one time . Can't help you much on the trailer as I have seen very few on a trailer .

Ran the boat for about 6 miles today. Little diesel run like a clock. Prowlerfish was exactly right, best cruise speed was between 6-7 at 1900rpm. Running the little engine faster than that only resulted in a small gain in speed. Spending the next few days tearing down and rebuilding the trailer, then the major clean-up, fluids, belt, hoses, and impeller changeouts.

The huge swim ladder is an asset. My friends and I are avid Divers/spearfishermen. That nice swim platform and big ladder is gonna come in real handy. We won’t be running out our usual 30 mile in this slow boat, but at least we will be riding in comfort for our shorter runs.

Any suggestions on the best methods to flush the fresh water side of the heat exchanger? Was just planning on using the same Preston flush as used on automobiles. Looks really nasty in there, so something needs to be done. Thanks for any and all advice.

Preston flush should be fine . the flush it out with fresh water over and . Now this is the important part . Use only Yanmar coolant or Dexcool . Do not use "compatible "with " Suitable with " or universal coolants . Yanmars are great engines , but they are very coolant sensitive . The wrong coolant can and will do a lot damage .

Concerning anodes, where all do you guys recommend they be installed/replaced on this boat? Combed through the info on this site and learned a lot, but was hoping you may have some ideas specific to this boat. Boat will be staying in salt water, so is zinc optimal? Where all should I make sure I place them? Haven’t got the hull out of the water yet to see what all is installed currently.

you need one on the shaft and one on the rudder . If you have trim tabs and they are drill put them there . And don't forget the engine zincs . I do recommend Zinc.

Btw any engine photos ? Like to see the install .

Yannies are GREAT diesel motors, however they are VERY SENSITIVE to maintenance requirements.

Over the last 14 years of ownership, I have only replaced the starter solenoids - BUT....

I have been on top of the maintenance 100% which in my case required coolant changes every 2 years.

WATCH THOSE ENGINE ZINCS - especially critical with ALUMINUM ENGINE COMPONENTS

After much more time and money than I planned, I finally got the trailer completed, and hauled the boat out this morning. Much cleaning to be done. Any advice for running the little Yanmar while on land? How do you supply the raw cooling water? Any connection for a garden hose, or some kind of muffs as used on an outboard? I’m thinking of rigging a garden hose attachment just past the seacock.

Prowlerfish gave theoretical performance figures for this hull and engine combo that turned out to be right on the money. Any chance you could give a cruise/max speed estimate if I installed a 230hp diesle? Not really sure what I’m going to do with the boat, but to be useable for me, I’m going to need a cruise better than 6-7 mph. Thanks in advance for your help.
