IMPORTANT difference re what you are thinking of Larry, and summer storm's post : Awlgrip and Interlux are totally different!! Imron and Awlgrip are the ultimate in above water marine paints and paint finishes. Interlux isn't in the same league, but having said that is still typically the right hull paint for most people to use over fibreglass. Don't expect to get Awlgrip results with Interlux.

A second main point : results on a horizontal surface are not necessarily indicative of what you will end up with on your hull sides ... on a horizontal surface the paint will settle and level on its own; vertically you run the risk of sags and drips if you apply too much paint on the surface, so technique and painting ability become more important...

So - in short - while summer storm's results look great, you might not get the same results ...

I think another member - LandV if I am not mistaken.. (has an F36?) repainted his hull blue using Interlux Brightside. If you research some of his posts you might get an an additional perspective.

On a side note, if summer storm got someone to do his topsides with Awlgrip for $600, and was quoted $1000 for the hull... I don't get it... the numbers don't make sense to me. Seems waaaaaay too low. A professional Awlgrip job for a full 32'ish hull + topsides, with proper cleaning, fairing, priming, etc is typically $30K+. You would use at least $300 worth of Awlgrip paint to do the topsides... so at typical labour rates did it only take the guy 3-4 hours to mask, clean, fill, prime, sand, repeat, paint, and clean up ??? My guts tell me someone took a shortcut somewhere (or the guy who did the job lost a crapload of money on it).

Summer Storm - I'm not taking a shot ... the numbers just don't make sense based on what I am understanding from your post and what I know from friends who have had related work done.

When I did this Awlgrip job, brush only, in '09 my paint and primer costs were almost $1,300. My labor was $23,500

Ron, that's precisely my point! The prep is the cost - not the paint. I can't imagine doing the prep right and saving a few $ on the paint ...

Let me clear this up. The 32 was painted by a pro (spray) and involved a total tear down, 24K keel to bridge. The job was great and the boat looks new but it was a lot of money for a "old boat" and I didn't want to spend that kind of money on the 26. As I said in my post "With all the prep work done the painter charged me $600" This was just for the guy to come in and paint, He didn't sand, tape, wipe down, or anything. He came in and painted. The only thing he touched was a brush. I did all the work to get it to the paint stage. He came in for 4-5 hours on 3 saturdays to do the 3 coats and I sanded during the week. His rate was 40 per hour and I think that is a good rate for a boat painter to get on his off time. This was just a guy, not a company, and I of course had other charges like the haul out, paint, sanding and prep supplies. I can't paint like this this guy did and the outcome was well worth the 600.00. One more thing, there are more layed off boat painters here in Lauderdale than taxis in NY so that might have helped on the price. There were no shortcuts taken on this project I just did 90 percent of the work myself, the painter guided me, and I think Foofer wanted to do most of the work himself. But word of warning, I did save a ton of money but it was a lot of work for both me and my wife and I am not sure I would do it again.

I took the windows out, wind screen, and the grab rails-

After the paint I added trim tape

You did it EXACTLY right Doug. I'm glad alot more people don't have your fotitude, or I'd be unemployed
But seriously...... $600 for a guy to spray AWLGRIP is an unbeatable price!!!!!! Not everybody can spray 2 parters.
I spent maybe 6 weeks preping, sanding ($280 worth of SP), filling, sanding. I know what you went through.
BTW..... boat looks great
