I have one, that was supplied to me with the boat, but have had boats without.
for obvious reasons if your in a dirty environment Im assuming its a good idea
just some thoughts on it,
opinions etc

I totally agree with Paul. If you have it already, USE IT.

Are you referring to a sea strainer that you screw off the top, pull out the strainer basket to dump out whatever and close it up again? If so, I don't know how you could do without it. Jimbo36

yes, its the one you can open the top and clean the basket. its a "see through" type looks to be made of a thick plastic with a wing nut at the top .
ok will intstall it . It looks to be original, but has been serviced and just needs new gaskets and seals
thanks

You really need it - I've seen it save a 900HP Lugger when we ran over weeds 50 miles offshore ... just pulled the basket, cleaned the weeds, and we were back on the go.

no its not an o ring, but rather a flat rubber seal that goes under the top, and a smaller one where the rod goes through, its pretty easy to make a gasket,
an old inner tube would work great, or any gasket material

What is the manufactures name? Tell us, do a Google search on it. Last fall I had an overheat problem, and the impeller blades were shot in the raw water pump whick draws the cooling water diectly from the lake (no strainer). Found out about strainers then and before our boat leaves the slip this year, it will have a strainer installed.

Larglo I would change the raw pump impeller once a year, depending on how much boating you do, its cheap and good insurance
