Interesting article on 10 meter diesel repower

Post by MattSC »

Not sure if anyone has posted a link to this before, found a pretty interesting article on repowering a 10meter with 4 Cylinder Yanmar Diesels.

Matt , I have seen that before .Interesting But I can tell you their performance numbers are hog wash . a 170hp would not come close to those numbers . You can't take out 330 hp engines and and replace them with 170hp (4LH DTE (170-hp) and expect to get close to the same speed . With those engines the boat would be under powered . You have cut the HP in half.

RWS repowered with 315 hp yanmars and I will bet his numbers are only slightly better ,.
My F36 came with 330 hp gassers and is repowered with 300 hp Diesels . I can tell you its slower at top end , after all its 60 less hp total . Yes cruse is faster as you can run closer to the top . I would thing it would be the same with RWS's boat .

I would like to here what he has to say .

I can't comment on the smaller diesels, but here is the performance chart for my 6 cylinders (if I can figure out how to post it correctly)

Hi Paul,
That's what I thought. I agree with you that it seems that it would be underpowered. If it were mine I would have gone with the same engines as RWS. I wonder where that boat is now? Thanks for the other article, looks like they did a nice job. I always liked the 10 meter and think it's worthy of a gas to diesel repower.

RWS,
Thanks for sharing your numbers

Matt , I don't belive this repower was ever done . No photos all specs on paper reread it all .

for example

"We think that twin Yanmar 4BY-180 180-hp diesels are an ideal choice for a Trojan 10 Meter repower project. One could put larger diesels in the boat, but speed was never this vessel’s strong suit. And, after all, this boat is a vintage craft being repowered, so it is wise to keep costs low. We would play to the boat’s strengths – good seakeeping stability, room and comfort. The small diesels give her respectable speed and tremendous range for cruising or fishing.

""we think" ?????

Hi Paul,
Maybe you're right, I thought I read in the article that Mack Boring Co. did a repower on a 10 meter previously, and they had tested it before and after the repower. Won't be the first time I'm wrong :D I would be curious to see how it would have fared after several years of use. Those little guys would definitely be working hard!
